Elon Musk hosted Saturday Night Live this last weekend and revealed in his opening monologue that he has Asperger's Syndrome. While we support Elon in coming out with his diagnosis, there are a few things to clarify as we understand Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD's).

Thanks for spreading info about asd/aspergers, I was diagnosed when I was three and struggled a lot with social interactions and being in lit up or loud areas. And even after explaining, most people just didn’t understand. Keep doing all the great stuff you do, because it might help people with these disorders have less depressing or lonely childhoods. Love everything you do Mike!

Doctor Mike THANK YOU! The stigma shouldn’t be here because autism doesn’t make a person anymore human than any other human! I have a BF that has autism and I adore him to death. Do I notice things that are odd? Yes. Do I care? No. Why? Because I think it’s adorable!

As a person with Asperger's I do have a deficiency but that isn't a bad thing. Some people may like to use a disorder as an excuse but im more interested in attempting to better myself and work hard to fit in rather than demand the world change for me. I have to work harder than a normal person in many aspects but that's ok. It means when I achieve something I KNOW I wasn't just handed it but had to claw my way to my goals. I understand for some the barrier of their disorder is too high to climb and im lucky I have a lower impact deficiency but ill be damned if I let something as small as being wired different stop me from being a normal person.

I don't think most people would find that a person who has this so-called condition anymore abnormal than just trying to live as a human being with all this mess going on nowadays. And I pretty much think that this fits the description of practically almost every person on the planet

Okay, but let's be real here - AS was added into the autism spectrum for federal support funding reasons, much more than medical ones, right?
Brittany Lehman

I wouldn't think so, a mental condition IS a mental condition, no matter what anyone else says. I actually have Aspbergers Syndrome, and it is in the autism spectrum because it's an neurological condition, NOT because of federal support funding. It effects people physically, as well as mentally, whether severely; or lightly, it all depends on the individual. I myself have several different physical ailments that DO impair my daily functions, so... yeah, it's both mental AND physical.

Not so fun fact: the term Aspergers is from WWII. The nazis were killing people with autism and this guy said “some of them can work for us...cause they are higher functioning than the rest” and he decided to call “high functioning” autism Asperger’s syndrome. It’s better to just say ASD or autism and not use functioning labels, but rather vocal or non-vocal.

I SO agree! We place our societal preconceptions on human behaviors. However, many people on the spectrum are more like super-humans! They are brilliant, have a photographic memory, are laser-focused, detail-oriented, a wealth of information, and are truly AMAZING!!! Others have an internal life that an average person couldn't possibly fathom. We have much to learn about them and how their incredible minds work. More listening, less labeling.

I'm sticking with "Asperger's" thanks. "Autism" still has associations in most people's minds that don't match the broader diagnosis. And things don't have to only be called by their formal medical name, either. Plenty of things out there happily going by a common name and a scientific name at the same time.

I was misdiagnosed with ASD and I can tell you the stigma is the desiease, through my own research and experiences I can tell you that not even 'experts' know the first thing about asd. It is a sudo science. All the challenges associated with asd only present themselves when others think you have it. It's more pigmailian effect than anything.

There's so many people with asperger's that's suffering trough social anxiety and depression. Just here in Norway a nurse working on an asperger and addiction program said that at least 16% of all their patients has asperger and there are large gray areas in the numbers since they're hard to diagnose and many (most) never get diagnosed because of their situations.

Yes, people with ASDs learn differently then others. BUT there ARE things that some people with them can NOT do that other people can. So to say it's ALL just "differences" and not deficits is 100% WRONG and disingenuous. Just like someone who is missing an arm or a leg. They do things differently, but there are also things that they CANT do that others can, so it's STILL literally a handicap. It's NOT wrong to say someone has a handicap or a deficit. It DOES NOT change that pierson's importance, value or potential what so ever. In fact, I was in the Army with a guy who had Aspergers, and if he can do that then he could do anything. So stop trying to use "nicer" words to explain something and make it sound like something it's not. Only people who are ashamed of themselves would do that. And you should NEVER be ashamed of yourself for ANY reason.

"Neuro-divergent" is a term I have never heard before, but will now be *THE* way I describe Aspergers! Also, had no idea Elon Musk or Dan Aykroyd have Aspergers. How does Dan Aykroyd have Aspergers, though? Don't people with Aspergers usually find it difficult to convey emotion, know the correct emotional response a situation warrants, or pick up on it in others? Things that are essential in being able to act and feed off of your fellow actors... I feel so confused. Lol 😞
Nonni Perkl
Nonni Perkl Prieš 9 dienų
Actually neuro-divergent revers to bigger group of people including amongst other for example ADHD people and the autism spectrum. And as autism is spectrum, some individuals don’t find it challenging or are even better at reading social cues than neurotypical individuals. Personally, I got diagnosed at 17 and I would say that I understand social situations well. Autistic individuals may share experiences and some traits are more common but everybody’s experience is unique. Some have significant disability from it, others from little to none.
